Can AI Help Midwives Make Better Decisions?
Description

When pregnant women call maternity emergency services, midwives must assess symptoms and provide guidance, often under significant time pressure and across language barriers.

Researchers from Roskilde University are collaborating with maternity departments at Hvidovre and Herlev Hospitals to develop an AI-powered assistant supporting midwives during telephone consultations. The system combines translation capabilities with real-time clinical decision support, helping midwives ask the right questions and identify potential risks.

What makes this project unique is that midwives are actively involved in designing the technology, ensuring that it supports professional judgement rather than replacing it.

In this session, two researchers and a midwife explore the opportunities and challenges of developing trustworthy, domain-specific AI for healthcare, and what it takes to create AI systems that professionals are willing - and able - to use in practice.
