Our current mobile and cloud ecosystem is heavily dependent on few large corporations, limiting our digital self-determination. Although solutions exist for decentralizing this ecosystem and bringing data stewardship back into the hands of the users, most notably the so-called "Fediverse", these solutions require a significant personal investment in time, resources, and technical skill. As most end users cannot commit these resources, federated and decentralized information networks remain a niche phenomenon. In our project, we aim to bring federation-capable "nanoservers" into end users' homes, enabling them to regain control over their own data by storing it on a dedicated, unobtrusive device in their own network. Our focus is on making the deployment of and migration to these servers as usable and easy as possible, to enable everyday users to take back control over their own data without losing access to their existing social networks.
