Carolina Barra Quaglia is the group leader of Protein Immunoinformatics research group at the Health Tech Department of Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The immune system orchestrates responses in health and disease through a series of events involving antigen processing and presentation, distinguishing between self and foreign entities to ultimately induce immunogenicity. However, in certain situations such as allergy, autoimmunity, or in the treatment with biological protein drugs, the immune system fails to induce tolerance and triggers an undesired immune reaction. The mechanisms behind these responses remain unknown. The Protein Immunoinformatics group focuses on developing machine learning tools, particularly using protein structural information, deep learning, and computer vision to understand and predict the allergenicity and immunogenicity of the proteins.
