How can we know that an autonomous ship, or an autonomous ferry is safe? Do regulatory bodies, which we entrust with approving autonomous technologies for future mobility and logistic solutions, have adequate methods and tools to assure the safety of such technologies? As technological development and integration of AI-based systems continues at a fast pace to shape the future waterborne mobility and logistics, these questions arise loud from concerned stakeholders urging regulators to define suitable verification and validation (V&V) frameworks for assessing risk and quantifying safety levels of AI-based autonomous systems.
