Status of Quantum Technology and at look at the first use cases
Description

Quantum technologies are progressing steadily from research to application, though maturity levels vary. While some quantum sensors are nearing market readiness, others, like quantum communication and computing, remain in earlier stages. The session opens with an overview of the field’s current status and realistic timelines for industry impact with a special focus on sensing applications and relevance for protecting critical infrastructure and dual use purposes to enhance security.

Real Use Cases
Speakers from academia and industry, including DTU SPACE, will present emerging applications of quantum technology that can enhance current navigation and communication resilience - areas increasingly challenged by GPS vulnerabilities. Examples include quantum gravimeters, capable of mapping underground structures such as water reservoirs, mineral deposits and resources, magma chambers, or buried infrastructure. The EU is already developing a network of these systems, with wider deployment expected within 3–5 years which will be deployed across Europe, complemented by gravimeters on high-altitude platforms.

Discussion: Outlook and industry pull
We close with a discussion on what to expect from ongoing quantum R&D: key directions, industry needs, and pathways toward scalable deployment with a special focus on the defence industry. The session invites reflection on how our sector can best engage with and benefit from the quantum transition.
