How can training and continuing education in industry be made more effective, in-depth, and flexible? In the research project AGAVE, we have explored the potential of gamification as a strategic learning tool on the factory floor. With so-called idle time games and learning-while-working games, we make use of both active and inactive production periods for targeted skill development – from onboarding in Job Instructions (JIs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to advanced training in dynamic Gantt planning. In a time of high employee turnover and constant process changes, there is a need for learning solutions that can be rapidly adapted. AGAVE develops games that integrate with the rhythm of work and can be easily adjusted in line with changes in production. In this way, gamification becomes a tool for continuous knowledge development in Industry 4.0.
